Among The Leaders

jeffmoriartyTaking a look at the top 10 lists heading into the NCAA East Regional, two Ivy Leaguers — Columbia sophomore Jeff Moriarty and Cornell senior Maria Matos — stand as the season’s No. 1 performers in the region.

Moriarty ran 1:47.96 in the qualifying round of the 800-meter run at Outdoor Heps. He was defeated in the final by Penn sophomore Darryll Oliver, whose winning time of 1:48.61 is ranked fourth in the East. Moriarty is one of just six runners in the nation to run below 1:48.

Matos has the best discus throw this season, flinging the orb a Heps’ record 174-8 at the League Championships in Philadelphia two weeks ago. Matos’ senior teammate Jeomi Maduka is ranked among the top 10 in the nation in both the long and triple jumps.

The League also has two senior high jumpers among the nation’s top 10, Harvard’s Becky Christensen on the women’s side and Cornell’s Garrett Huyler on the men’s. Both Princeton hammer thrower Alex Pessala and Brown javelin thrower Craig Kinsley are also in the top 10.
