Men's Preview: Dartmouth Big Green

Through the years, the Big Green have been known for going the distance, winning 14 team and 11 individual Heps cross country titles since 1982 … So it seems a little out of place to start the preview with the sprints, but freshman Connor Reilly (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior Muhammad Abdul-Shakoor (Stone Mountain, Ga.) have been holding the top spots in the League in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes all season long … Unfortunately for them, the 200 isn’t contested at Indoor Heps … Reilly, whose father John played football and ran track at Dartmouth, isn’t the only freshman who will be in the hunt for big points for Coach Barry Harwick … Rookie Anthony Romaniw (Hamilton, Ont.) — who last year at this time was serving as his high school’s ice hockey captain — is among the fastest 800-meter runners in the League this winter … That group, with four freshman among the top six performers, should prove to be an engaging battle between pure speed and tactical savvy … Another rookie is Barret Folk (Memphis, Tenn.), who has already cleared 15-5 1/2 in the pole vault … No one has soared over 16 feet for the Green in more than a dozen years and Folk, who was a high school wrestler, hopes to change that … But all those youngsters are also benefitting from the guidance of senior captain Ted Lesher (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), who is among the League leaders in three events — the 60-meter hurdles and both the long and triple jumps … Junior David Irving (Manchester, N.H.) stands 6-foot-8 and weighs about 240 pounds … And he can toss a 35-pound weight more than 60 feet, which would guarantee him points among a tough field … His best toss of the year is 61-7, which is the best by a Big Green thrower in more than a decade … Two runners made a splash in the 5k at the Terrier Classic back in late January and no one will be able to overlook sophomore Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) in the distance events.
