Men's Preview: Brown Bears

A more seasoned squad than last year across the board, the Bears are geared up for improvement from their fifth-place finish in ’09 … The men will look to senior Duriel Hardy (West Chester, Pa.), the squad’s highest point-scorer at Indoor Heps last year… Hardy placed in the 3k and was runner-up in the 5k … Posting personal bests in the mile and 3k already, Hardy looks faster than ever and is poised for high finishes … Sophomore teammate Matt Duffy (Oakland, Calif.) has posted huge personal bests in the mile and 3k, setting him up for high finishes in either event … The distance medley relay squad, which included Duffy and Hardy along with sophomore Anthony Schurz (South Bend, Ind.) and freshman Nathan Elder (Quincy, Ill.), clocked a time nearly five seconds ahead of all other Ivy DMRs this season and is looking to challenge for the title … Senior John Loeser (Weston, Conn.) was a top-10 finisher at Heps Cross Country in the fall and could shake things up in the middle distances here … Senior Bryan Powlen (Kewanna, Ind.) finished fourth in the shot last year and is looking to improve that after his breakout performance at Outdoor Heps ’09, where he finished a close second in the shot and won the discus … Just last weekend at USATF New Englands, Powlen uncorked an NCAA-qualifying 58-4 1/2 … Freshman Dan Smith (Saco, Maine) and sophomore Zack Bahr (Topeka, Kan.) could be factors in the shot and weight, respectively, as both have posted competitive marks this season … Smith, who won a number of Maine high school titles, is the younger brother of Brynn Smith, the star thrower for the Brown women’s team … Senior Mike Mazerik (Poland, Ohio) looks to make himself a factor in the short sprints after posting competitive marks as well … And in the jumps, senior Andrew Chapin (Redmond, Wash.) looks poised to improve upon last year’s fifth-place finish with big points for the Bears.
