Men's Preview: Penn Quakers

As Coach Charlie Powell prepares for Indoor Heps, he has to figure that he will get a good number of points from senior captain John Carelli (Allentown, Pa.) … That’s because Carelli lit the board for 18 points at Indoor Heps a year ago, when he won the triple jump and took second in the long jump … He will battle Cornell’s dynamic duo of Duane Teixiera and Gary Jones in an effort to defend his triple crown this year … Powell must also be wondering how many points freshman Tim Carey (Sewell, N.J.) can rack up himself as appears on the League’s top-10 list in four events — the 200 (22.22), 400 (48.71), 500 (1:03.84) and the 60 hurdles (8.39) … He recently won the 400 at Yale’s Geigengack Invitational … Once the season moves outside, he will be able to showcase his specialty, the intermediate hurdles … Last April he ran the fastest high school one-lap hurdle race in the nation (54.07) … Carey has classmates among the top performers in both the sprints and the hurdles … Patrick Foley (Phoenix, Ariz.) has run nearly as fast in the 200 (22.26) while fellow rookie Michael Brown (Hummelstown, Pa.) has actually been faster in the high hurdles (8.27) … “We have a wonderful, wonderful freshman class,” Powell told the Daily Pennsylvanian recently. “One of the best we’ve ever had.” … The Red and Blue have a long history of 800-meter success and that has been continued by both sophomore Brian Fulton (West Chester, Pa.) and junior Darryll Oliver (Brooklyn, N.Y.), both of whom can go below 1:50 … But both have competed sparingly this winter, including Oliver, the 2009 Outdoor Heps champion, who ran below his ability at Princeton over the weekend … If healthy, both could claim 10 points in middle distance events … In their absence, junior Jeff Weinstein (New York, N.Y.) has emerged as a star, with performances among the League’s top 10 in both the 1,000 (2:25.94) and mile runs (4:08.69) … The Quakers have a pair of potential big scorers in the pole vault in senior Anthony Abitante (Berkley Heights, N.J.) and junior James Foreman (Winfield, Ill.).
