Men's Preview: Princeton Tigers

The key to the Tigers’ title hopes this year lies in their depth, after losing to Cornell by a sizable margin despite matching the Big Red in event wins … Princeton then easily won the annual HYP meet last week … The Tigers come prepared with 24 performances ranked between second and sixth in Heps this winter to complement seven League-leading performances … In head coach Fred Samara’s words, “The key to winning Heps is depth, just having champions isn’t good enough: it takes a total team effort to fight for every point. Traditionally I can rely on the champions to score their points, but it’s the fourth, fifth and sixth placers that give you the trophy.” … Those champions are back in form, with sophomore sprinter Austin Hollimon (Decatur, Ga.), sophomore vaulter Dave Slovenski (Brunswick, Maine), senior thrower Eric Plummer (Plainfield, N.J.) and senior high jumper Justin Frick (Freehold, N.J.) all with League-leading marks in their respective events, and junior Mike Eddy (Asheboro, N.C.) trailing only super-freshman teammate Russell Dinkins (Wilbraham, Mass.) in the 500m … Hollimon has thrown down a 47.03 in the 400-meter dash this season, one of the four fastest times in Heps history … Dinkins is part of a strong middle-distance freshman class for the Tigers, including Peter Callahan (Evanston, Ill.), Nathan Mathabane (Portland, Ore.) and Michael Palmisano (Dresher, Pa.) … Distance coach Steve Dolan credits a large part of the freshmen’s development to the leadership of upperclassmen … “We have a strong contingent of upperclassmen who have scored at Heps in past years and this year they have done a great job of, in addition to getting themselves to the level they need to be, providing guidance to our freshman class to bring them along to high levels of performance in their first collegiate track season,” Dolan said … Some of those upperclassmen he refers to are junior Kyle Soloff (Rockaway, N.J.), sophomore Donn Cabral (Glastonbury, Conn.), sophomore Brian Leung (West Windsor, N.J.), sophomore Trevor VanAckeren (Bethlehem, Pa.) and junior Mark Amirault (Walpole, Mass.), who have all turned in ranked marks … Soloff is unbeaten in the mile this year.
