Women's Preview: Brown Bears

The Bears finished a respectable fourth at Indoor Heps last year, after being hit hard by illness and injury across event groups … Now healthier and far more experienced, the Bears look stronger than ever and hope to ring in the new decade with big performances … Reigning shot champ senior Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, Ill.) won with the third-farthest throw in meet history last year and is looking to defend her title … Junior Brynn Smith (Saco, Maine) looks poised to rack up big points this Heps, as she hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in her first meet of the season and is the top seed in both the shot and the weight going into the meet … She was runner-up behind Grunloh in the shot and third in the weight last year, before earning the Most Outstanding Performer Award at Outdoor Heps … Healthy and stronger than ever, senior Ariel Wright (Oakland, Calif.) will shake things up in the 3k and 5k … Her first-team All-Ivy finish at Heps Cross Country in the fall and the personal bests she has had already this season make her a serious threat for titles in Tiger-loaded fields … Returning 5k scorer Lauren Pischel (La Jolla, Calif.), a junior, should also be a factor … In the middle distances, junior and returning 800m scorer Kesley Ramsey (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), sophomore Rosie Fleming (Westlake Village, Calif.) and freshman phenom Bree Shugarts (Lewistown, Pa.) have all posted top ten League runs so far and could score big for Bruno … The women’s 4x800m relay finished a close second at this meet last year but ran away with the title outdoors … All members of the squad return and look to defend their title … Senior Jasmine Chukwueke (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Lucy Higgins (Jeffersonville, Vt.) have posted competitive marks in the long sprints this season and will also be key factors in the relays … Sophomore Susan Scavone (Summit, N.J.) finished fourth in the 60m hurdles at this meet in ’09 and looks to challenge again there as well as in the short sprints … In the high jump, senior Anja Hergrueter (Newton, Mass.) bested everyone but the Crimson’s now-graduated star Becky Christiansen last Heps and is looking to challenge for the title this year … A new addition to the squad, junior and former Penn State jumper Gabriela Baiter (Greenlawn, N.Y.) has leaped farther than anyone in the League this season and is looking to challenge for the title … Teammate and senior Shannon Stone (Mont Vernon, N.H.) looks poised to join her by scoring in the event as well.
