Just four years ago, Anna Pierce (nee Willard) took third in the mile at Indoor Heps (behind Princeton’s Cack Ferrell and Yale’s Lindsay Donaldson). At Outdoor Heps in the spring, she was second in the 800-meter run, but more than two seconds behind Cornell’s Morgan Uceny.
That background makes her ascendency to world-class status all the more surprising as today in Doha, Qatar, Pierce finished fourth in the 800 at the IAAF World Indoor Championships with a time of 2:00.53. The title wound up as a pitched battle between Russia’s Mariya Savinova and Great Britain’s Jennifer Meadows, who had taken the lead by the 600-meter mark. Savinova won in 1:58.26, less than two-tenths of a second in front of Meadows.
Alysia Johnson of the United States took charge of the race early, getting to the midway point in a quick 58.16 seconds. She would hold on for third in a personal best 1:59.60 followed by Pierce.
