The Matchup in Mayaguez

In 2005, Harvard’s Samyr Laine recorded the longest triple jump in Ivy League history, landing 53-7 1/2 from the takeoff board. Three years later, Muhammad Halim of Cornell broke that mark, leaping 54-5 1/2 and winning the NCAA Championship. Those two still stand first and second in League annals.

Well, today in Mayaguez, P.R., they squared off at the Central American & Caribbean Games, Laine wearing the colors of Haiti and Halim representing the U.S. Virgin Islands. This time Laine got the better of the Cornellian, taking third (55-9 3/4) while Halim was fifth (53-8 1/4).

“There’s more in the tank,” wrote Laine on Facebook last night. “But I’ll take the bronze; for now…”

Saving his winning performance for his final jump, Leevan Sands of the Bahamas beat Grenada’s Randy Lewis by a centimeter (17.21 to 17.20). Sands’ mark translates to 56-5 3/4.

UPDATE: Halim — who was born in St. Croix, USVI — had won silver in the long jump a few days ago and I completely missed it. His 25-6 3/4 was bettered only by Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith (26-11 3/4).
