And The Winner Is… Corona del Mar

Located in the East Bluff neighborhood of Newport Beach, Calif., Corona del Mar High School was established in 1962 and its Sea Kings have been flying high athletically ever since. The most famous Sea King track and field athlete of all-time is Mark McGrath, who later became the charismatic lead singer for Sugar Ray before becoming an infotainment celebrity.

But Corona del Mar has a new distinction this year, that of most popular alma mater of this year’s Heps athletes. Nine of the 974 Ivy Leaguers were once a Sea King — two more than the seven churned out by Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High in Massachusetts and three more than Bishop Guertin High of Nashua, N.H., and Hinsdale Central High of Illinois.

The Corona del Mar nine are led by Princeton senior Sarah Cummings, the two-time defending Outdoor Heps champion in the 10,000-meter run, and Harvard senior Hilary May, a first-team All-Ivy relay runner and 800-meter threat for the Crimson. Cummings and May — two of the four seniors — have been followed by a junior, two sophomores and two freshmen, including Cummings’ younger sister Marisa.
