A two-time Heps champion won two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers. Picture above, he appears to be signaling the Bart Starr touchdown in the famed “Ice Bowl” against the Cowboys. Who is he?
Answer following the jump.
The Heps champion shot putter was Charles ‘Chuck’ Mercein, who was a Packer running back in the late 1960s. He won Outdoor Heps for Yale in 1963 with a winning mark of 56-9 1/4. In 1965 he claimed the Indoor Heps title with a toss of 55-6 1/2.
Three years ago, Martin Hendricks of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel caught up with Mercein, who talked about the Ice Bowl. “I had chipped away some ice during the timeout, so I had pretty good footing” he said. “On the snap — hut one, hut two — I took off and, lo and behold, I’m not going to get the ball. But I couldn’t stop, and I threw my hands up in the air to show the officials I wasn’t pushing Bart in. Otherwise, that would have been a penalty.
“I wish my career could have been more productive and longer, but I was very blessed to play for Coach Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers. I have a championship ring and a Super Bowl ring.”
