Penn freshman Maalik Reynolds has won the Penn Relays high jump championship with a clearance of 2.22 meters (7-3 1/4). He becomes the first Ivy Leaguer to win since Princeton’s Tora Harris in 2002 and the first Penn jumper to claim the title since Will Lee shared the crown with three others in 1955.
Reynolds’ winning leap came during the ruckus of the USA -vs- The World’s women’s sprint medley relay wrote Joe Juliano of the Philadelphia Inquirer:
“It was like one big ball of loud,” [Reynolds] said. “But I was able to focus in the midst of all that.
“It’s something I wasn’t really used to, all the people, but I really enjoyed it. Maybe I was kind of nervous [starting out], but as I started jumping I let the crowd kind of feed me.”
