Crimson, Bulldogs Win In Cambridge

Special thanks to Robert K. Harle, a Cambridge professor and Achilles track team member, for the photos used with this post.

The squads from Harvard and Yale proved too much for the teams from Oxford and Cambridge at the Wilberforce Road Track in Cambridge, U.K., on Tuesday. Both the men’s and women’s teams scored big victories in what the Cambridge News calls “the world’s oldest international track and field meeting.”

Dan Chenoweth of Harvard was a star for the men, racking up victories in both the 5,000- (14:22.06) and 10,000-meter runs (31:00.05). Junior teammate Nico Weiler was also a double winner, claiming both the pole vault (14-9 1/2) and the long jump (22-2 1/2).

For the women, Harvard thrower Shannon Watt was the lone double winner, taking both the shot (43-2 1/2) and the discus (141-10). But three female competitors established meet records — Kate Grace of Yale in the 800 (2:05.32), her teammate Nihal Kayali in the 1,500 (4:29.74) and Harvard freshman Hannah Mayer in the javelin (144-9).
