Dartmouth graduate and three-time Heps cross country champion Ben True has won the USA Men’s 10k Championship in Atlanta, Ga., on Monday. That event was run in conjunction with the 42nd Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race.
True — in his first appearance at the event — was the first American finisher, in 28:28, while Kenyans Sammy Kitwara and Mathew Kisorio finished 1-2 for the overall title. True — not even considered a contender by the USATF pre-event press release — earned $10,000 for dethroning Ed Moran, by one second, as the U.S. champion. True was fifth overall while former Harvard (and William & Mary) distance standout Chas Gillespie was 46th and Princeton alum David Nightingale 68th.
But the hot weather was a factor. “It was quite unbearable at the end,” said True. “But it’s a great course, phenomenal.”
