Samyr Laine, formerly of Harvard and now representing Haiti, had a birthday he will always remember as he won the triple jump at the Central American & Caribbean Athletic Confederation Championships on Sunday, his 27th birthday. The CACAC Champs were held in Mayaguez, Puerto, Rico.
It turned out to be an easy win as any three of his jumps would have claimed the title. But Laine’s first leap of 17.09 meters (56-1) was more than two feet further than anyone else’s best, including former Cornellian Muhammad Halim, who was fourth at 15.95 (52-4). Halim represents the U.S. Virgin Islands internationally.
Earning silver was Cuban Osniel Tosca, whose top mark measured at 16.41 (53-10 1/4).
