For The Good of the Clan

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) made a great move last week, naming Dartmouth men’s coach Barry Harwick as its Division I cross country president.
We could write quite a bit about the resume accomplishments of Harwick, who has six cross country team titles in his 20-year career, but his real measure in this appointment is how he will conduct himself in the role. In that respect, he has few peers. Harwick is a wonderful listener and a fair and objective party, even when the consensus works against his best interest.
His long-time sports publicity, Kathy Slattery, who passed away suddenly a few years back, used to frequently make reference to “the good of the clan” in League-wide meetings and Harwick takes the same approach. The Division cross country coaches are in excellent hands.
Photographer extraordinaire Dan Grossman caught Harwick above with Dartmouth president Jim Yong Kim at the 2011 Dartmouth Relays.
