With A Mighty Crash

What might have been. Cornell graduate Morgan Uceny was in nearly perfect position to win gold in the 1,500-meter final at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. The pace was slow, which favored her sensational kick, and she was in a strong position on the outside, just meters behind the leader.

That’s when in the tightly-bunched group, Kenyan Hellen Obiri tripped and took Uceny down with her. Given the winning time of 4:05.40 by fellow American Jenny Simpson, we can only speculate what may have been.

Clearly a disappointing finish to the Championships, Uceny’s season will continue later this month as the Diamond League series — which she leads — concludes.
