Much like the Columbia Lions did at the Paul Short Invitational a few weeks back, this is a great weekend for Heps’ squads to make a statement against the nation’s top competition.
On Friday, Harvard and Princeton will compete at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., along with several highly ranked foes as both men’s and women’s races will feature six top 10 teams. For the women, the field will include No. 1 Villanova, No. 2 Providence, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 New Mexico, No. 8 Syracuse and No. 9 Iowa State. And for the men it will be No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 BYU, No. 7 Indiana, No. 9 N.C. State and No. 10 Oregon.
That same day, Cornell, Penn and Yale will be at the Penn State Nationals, which has three ranked women’s teams — West Virginia, Penn State and Duke. Up in Providence, the Brown Bears will be hosting the Rothenberg Run, which will also feature the nation’s top high schooler, Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J. Last weekend, Cheserek became the first high schooler to run the 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt in less than 12 minutes.
On Sunday, Columbia, Cornell and Dartmouth will be in the Hoosier State for the Indiana State Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. That event doesn’t just bring excellent competition, it gives the athletes a chance to familiarize themselves with the LaVern Gibson Course, where the NCAA Championships are contested in late November. It appears that we found most of the missing top 10 teams from the Wisconsin race. The Indiana State lineup will include No. 3 Florida State, No. 4 Colorado and No. 5 Georgetown for the women as well as No. 5 Iona, No. 7 Indiana and No. 8 Colorado for the men.
