Athletes of the Championships
Dartmouth senior Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) tracked down Columbia’s Kyle Merber to beat him at the finish of the men’s championship. Shaw’s victory, by just one-tenth of a second, matches the second-closest in League history. The three narrowest victors have all worn the Green (Jim Sapienza, 1984; and Jarrod Shoemaker, 2002).
Columbia senior Kyle Merber (Dix Hills, N.Y.) came back from a freak injury that sidelined him for the entire 2010-11 season to finish second at his first Heps Championships’ event in well over a year. Merber made a break with 400 meters to go and wound up just a fraction of a second short of the title.
Rookie of the Championships
Princeton freshman Matt McDonald (Annandale, N.J.) was the fifth and final scorer for the champion Tigers as well as the only freshman male to earn All-Ivy honors with his 12th place finish.
