What’s Your Summer Hold?

Above is Kenya Kirkland, a 2010 Fellow, and below Harrison Soebroto, who served in 2011.

If you have been hanging around HepsTrack long enough, you have probably seen our plea for Fellows before. We are at it again.

This site’s founders — Brett Hoover & Patricia Melton — are asking for qualified candidates to take a challenge to make a transformative impact on the next generation of students. Our paid service opportunity ($1500 for 18 days; travel, room & board covered) is ideal for students whose interests run from Teach for America to Wall Street from law school to non-profit endeavors.

X-Mester — a residential university experience which partners successful collegians with at-risk high schoolers — is specifically designed to improve college readiness and completion for the high school students.

Eighty percent of our Fellows who have applied to Teach for America have been accepted. With the unique experience of serving multiple roles as teacher, leadership coach, tutor, college advisor, mentor and residential advisor, the Fellows gain valuable insight into urban education reform and real-world leadership experience. The TFA candidates have reported that a substantial component in their interviews has been their X-Mester experience.

The Fellowship is open to all rising college seniors and graduates — not just athletes — yet we have had particular success with those harboring the assets and character formed by collegiate competition. Nearly 20 scholar-athletes have been chosen as Fellows.

You are encouraged to take a look at the program and, even if it might not be for you, to share it with someone who might find it to be of interest.
