Cornell rising sophomore Stephen Mozia competed in the 6kg shot put today at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

In the qualification round, Mozia threw 19.81 meters (64-11 3/4), easily qualifying for the finals with the fourth best mark in the morning.

The finals were six hours later and everyone who qualified for the final started with blank slates.  Mozia could not replicate his preliminary effort as his best throw was 19.45 meters (63-9 3/4), placing him 10th overall.  Had his preliminary effort counted, he would have finished sixth overall.  His season best for the 6 kg shot put was his winning throw from the USA Junior Nationals, 20.20 meters (66-3 1/4).

New Zealand’s Jacko Gill won the event with a throw of 22.20 meters (72-10).  He was the defending champion in this event.

The other Ivy qualifier, Princeton’s Eddie Owens, will compete in the steeplechase trials on Friday morning.
