Up in Hanover, N.H., Nike is out and New Balance is in.
The Dartmouth’s Blaze Joel has written an interesting piece about how the Big Green track & field teams have a new sponsorship deal with New Balance, which is committed to helping not just outfit the teams, but provide support for the Dartmouth Relays as well as the summer camps.
“Nike was not particularly supportive of the team, so signing a contract with New Balance has been really supported in all three areas,” Coach Barry Harwick told Joel.
How it came together is worth noting. Women’s cross country coach Mark Coogan, who was an Olympic marathoner, ran for New Balance during his professional career. It is Coogan who has been working to develop All-Americans Abbey D’Agostino and Alexi Pappas. And now that work has paid off in more than just lowered times.
“I think [Pappas’ and D’Agostino’s] performance this past year was really, really helpful,” Coogan said. “Without those two, [the New Balance agreement] might not have happened.”
It also helped that two former Dartmouth distance runners — Colin Ingram and Harry Norton — now work at New Balance.
Among the international middle-distance stars representing New Balance internationally are Jenny Simpson, Maggie Vessey, Brenda Martinez and the British Milers (including Andy Baddeley).
Could D’Agostino — who’s only a junior — become a future face of NB? We will have to wait and see.
