Athletes of the Week 6

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Cornell senior Katie Kellner (West Windsor, N.J.) has consistently been the top runner on one of the nation’s top teams. That included a 15th-place showing at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational. She finished in 20:04 as her Big Red took fifth overall, ahead of 15 nationally ranked squads. Special shout out to Penn senior Leslie Kovach (Irwin, Pa.), who won the Leopard Invitational at Lafayette on Saturday, but the award is Kellner’s.

WOMEN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Two runners who finished within three seconds of one another at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational this weekend share the award. They are Yale’s Emily Stark (Concord, Mass.) was 105th (20:51) and Dartmouth’s Dana Giordano (Bernardsville, N.J.) was 115th (20:54). Stark scored for the Bulldogs, who are expecting a big jump after beating seven ranked teams. Giordano, in the absence of All-American Abbey D’Agostino, was the first runner across for the Big Green.

WOMEN’S ALUMS OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth graduates Hilary Dionne (Cumberland, R.I.) and Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.) share alumni honors this week. Dionne won Saturday’s ING Hartford Marathon in 2:40:35, more than six minutes in front of the next female finisher. Pappas — now an Oregon Duck — was third at Pre-Nationals in Louisville, ahead of Florida State’s Violah Lagat and teammate Jordan Hasay. Her UO team was a close second to the No. 1 Seminoles. Here’s a story about Pappas’ busy weekend.

MEN’S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
This week’s award is split between the top two Heps’ finishers at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational — Harvard junior Maksim Korolev (Harrisonville, Mo.) and Columbia senior Mike Murphy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). Korolev was the first Ivy runner to finish, taking 18th in 23:44, as the Crimson were the third Heps’ team behind the ranked squads of Columbia and Princeton. Murphy was 22nd (23:47) as the Lions were fifth overall in a race Coach Willy Wood called the greatest in school history.

MEN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard freshman Tom Purnell (Gloucestershire, U.K.) was the first Heps’ first-year across the line at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational, taking 188th overall in 24:40. He was the third finisher for the Crimson, which finished a stone’s throw behind nationally ranked Notre Dame and Virginia and ahead of ranked Missouri.

MEN’S ALUMNI OF THE WEEK
Brown graduate Dan Lowry (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), who now runs for the Michigan Wolverines, finished higher than all active Ivies at the adidas Wisconsin Invitational, taking 11th overall (23:37). That performance led the Wolverines to a seventh-place finish overall, which should improve their No. 24 ranking significantly.
