If you base your expectations for the Big Red men on the result of the adidas Wisconsin Invitational, you will likely be surprised. The field was overcrowded, perhaps 50 percent larger than the course allowed, and half of the team went down in a nasty spill within the first 200 meters. So finishing 43rd of 45 was not indicative of the team’s talent.
Seniors Brett Kelly (Madison, Wis.) and Nick Wade (North Attleboro, Mass.) provide the leadership for Coach Zeb Lang. Kelly had a breakout junior year, which saw him earn second-team All-Ivy honors in cross country and then post the sixth-best 10k time in school history (29:24.58). Wade, on the other hand, is an 800-meter specialist who previously dabbled in cross. But this year he was the team’s top finisher at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh, as the Red finished an impressive sixth.
Others to watch include juniors Gabe Heck (Madison, Wis.), Andrew Herring (Lexington, Mass.) and Max Groves (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) as well as sophomore Ben Potts (Haddonfield, N.J.). — Patricia Melton
