Among our favorite graduates of the League is Samyr Laine, the Harvard triple jumper and Georgetown-school lawyer who represents Haiti internationally, including at the London Olympics this summer.
Raised in Newburgh, N.Y., Laine had not visited Haiti until 2011. But now he has been named that country’s Sportsman of the Year by Le Matin, a daily newspaper on the island.
The 2010 earthquake that rocked Haiti changed Laine’s aspirations. He felt he could no longer simply represent the country internationally, he had to be a part of it. Now much of his focus is on his Jump for Haiti Foundation, which will provide mentorship for Haitian children and development of more athletes. He is also working on a book, A Foot in Two Worlds, which will be published by Thinkworks Publishing.
