Yale graduate Kate Grace won the USA 1-Mile Road Championship (AKA the Grand Blue Mile) at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Tuesday, beating the likes of Sara Hall, Shannon Rowbury, Alice Schmidt and Sarah Bowman Brown.
Her winning time of 4:43.02 set an event record and was narrowly ahead of Hall (3:43.61) and Heather Kampf (4:43.69).
“The field was incredible,” she told Andy Hamilton of the Des Moines Register. “So many amazing runners. I knew I was very strong, but I also knew it was kind of an underdog thing. I was the only one — and my coach — who knew I had a good shot.”
Who are we to argue with Kate, but she did run a 2:01 in the 800 already this season. In our mind, she can no longer claim underdog status. Hear that, Kate!
Grace will be running the 1,500m on Friday night at the Drake Relays.
