The Associated Press reports that Dartmouth graduate Adam Nelson will receive the gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics which has been stripped from Yuriy Bilonog because of doping.
Nelson, who finished second in the shot put, has been waiting since December for such a ruling after the Ukrainian was stripped of his medal. The International Olympic Committee held off making the change until the results were officially adjusted by the IAAF.
In February, Millrose Games organizers feted Nelson, playing the national anthem in his honor moments before the Wanamaker Mile.
“This is a great example, and hopefully an inspiration for younger athletes that it does pay to do it the right way over the long run,” Nelson told Doug Binder of ArmoryTrack.com. “I think it’s a great thing in sports right now to show that our athletes can accomplish great things without drugs, without cheating.”
