Steepling Into History

The final day of the NCAA Championships saw the seventh All-America performance by an Ivy Leaguer as Cornell junior Rachel Sorna broke 10 minutes in the steeplechase for the sixth time this season.

Overall she was fourth in 9:52.86. There has been just one Cornell female to finish higher in any NCAA event (Stephanie Best, third in the 1500 in both 1990 and 1991).

Rob Robbins of the Cornell men’s team nearly pulled off a top-eight finish, taking ninth in the javelin throw with a toss of 70.07 meters (229-11).

Other Leaguers in competition on Saturday were Harvard high jumper Mary Hirst (21st, 5-7 3/4), Columbia 5k runner Daniel Everett (17th, 14:24.44) and Penn 5k runner Thomas Awad (18th, 14:24.81).
