Taking It To Russia

Cornell rising senior Bruno Hortelano, the 2013 Heps Most Outstanding Performer, will be extending his season for yet another month by hitting the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships to be held in Moscow, Russia (Aug. 10-19).

Sporting a hairstyle in honor of his native Spain at the European Under 23 Championships in Tempere, Finland, Hortelano finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.70. He’d run 20.58 in the semifinal.

Hortelano also ran the third leg of the 4×100 relay which finished third overall and set a Spanish national record of 38.83 — well under the World Qualifying standard of 39.10. Although based in Spain for the summer, Bruno continues to train under the guidance of Cornell sprint coach Adrian Durant and head coach Nathan Taylor.

Hortelano hopes to be joined by teammate Montez Blair in Moscow. Blair holds one of the top three spots for the U.S. in the high jump, but remains shy of the needed qualifying standard of 2.28 meters. Blair is currently in London in search of final opportunities before his qualifying window closes on July 20.
