XC 2013 – Athletes of the Week #1
Wow – such dominant performances so early in the season! Now that I’ve finally caught up with the rest of the crowd, time to present our athletes of the week from last weekend.
Abbey D’Agostino (Topsfield, Mass.) dominated Dartmouth Invitational in 20:12.34 with 51 second margin of victory (over 250m ahead of 2nd place if I did the math correctly). This 51 second margin of victory was greater than the sum of the margins of her victories from 2011 and 2012 combined! Big Green finished 3rd as team behind #6 Georgetown and Syracuse.
(Warren, N.J.) won individual title at Delaware XC Invitational, helping the Princeton Tigers win the women’s team title. Curham was the only runner to finish in under 22 minutes as she crossed the line at 21:39.39 on the 6km course. As a result of this dominant race, the Princeton Tigers earned a 29th placing national ranking on the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll
Both James Leakos (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Sam Pons (South Pasadena, Calif.) led team top scoring sweeps at their respective races this past weekend, which helped their teams to the team titles. Leakos led Harvard’s 1-2-3-4-5 sweep at 100th running of the Harvard-Yale dual. This was Leakos’ second individual title at this rivalry race, winning the title in 23:22 over 8km. Pons led Princeton to team victory at the Delaware XC Invitational,by getting the individual title in 25:00.00 over the 8km course. Princeton’s sweep covered 1-2-3-4-5-6-7. Princeton was rewarded in the national rankings this past week, earning the highest national ranking in school history – 9th.
Mark Tedder (Battle Ground, Wash.) won individual title at Cornell-Army dual meet in first-ever competition, 25:22.3, on the modified Moakley Course. Cornell won team title 19-40.
In other national ranking news, the Cornell women have also broken the top 10 by earning the 9th ranking. Columbia men dropped to #27 from #18, while Dartmouth men are receiving votes in the men’s polls.
