There will be a lot of Ivy action going on this weekend in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
The Notre Dame XC Invitational (South Bend, Ind.) will be held this Friday at the Notre Dame Golf Course. Princeton (men and women) and Columbia (men only) are listed among the teams entered in the Blue Races. The Princeton women will race first at 4:15pm, while the Princeton and Columbia men race at 5pm. Expect the men’s Blue race to be a good preview of what can happen at Heps XC (which is just a month away now!)
The 38th Annual Lehigh Paul Short Invitational (Bethlehem, Penn.) is set for Saturday at the Murray H. Goodman Campus. Fourteen of the 16 cross country squads are listed between the Gold and Brown races. The Men’s Gold race, set for 11am, will include Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, and Yale. The Women’s Gold race will start at 11:45am, with Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Penn toeing up at the starting line. The Brown men’s (12:15pm) and women’s (1pm) races will feature the Princeton squads.
Last year, the Ivy League dominated this weekend. Cornell women introduced themselves to the national stage by winning the Women’s Gold race by finishing 2-4-9-13-27 in a field of 360 runners. Of those scoring positions, three of those ladies are back – Rachel Sorna (4th), Emily Shearer (9th), and Devin McMahon (13th). The woman who won that race is back as well – Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino. For the men, Dartmouth now-senior Will Geoghegan was the top Ivy finisher by earning 5th place, helping the Big Green finish 4th in the team standings. Princeton men surprised many on the national stage by finishing 2nd at the Notre Dame Invitational last year. Six of the top seven (including four of the five scorers) are back for 2013 – Alejandro Arroyo-Yamin (10th in 2012), Chris Bendsten (17th in 2012), Jonathan Vitez (36th in 2012), Matt McDonald (48th in 2012), Eddie Owens (51st in 2012), and Tyler Udland (76th in 2012). Columbia men participated in the Greater Louisville Classic last year, where they finished 2nd in the team standings and bested many other nationally ranked programs. Two of the scorers are competing in 2013 – Jake Sienko and Nico Composto.
As long as my schedule permits, I (Mary) will be attending the Paul Short Invitational and I will try to do my best tweeting a cross country event. Follow @HepsTrack and/or #HepsXC if you’re on twitter on Saturday morning. If I have a change in plans, I will do my best to let HepsNation know ASAP.
As for anyone else who will be attending any of the races (whether as an athlete or spectator), share your tweets with HepsNation. Last year, we got some great updates from Columbia then-senior Mark Feigen regarding the Lions’ 14-hour plane trek from NYC to Louisville.
