First World Junior Finalist for 2014

If Harvard’s Nikki Okwelogu was disappointed about missing the discus throw final cut on Thursday, she did not let it negatively impact her shot put performance this afternoon.

Only the top 12 throwers from this afternoon’s shot put preliminaries would qualify for tonight’s final.  Going into the competition, Okwelogu was ranked 13th with her personal best of 16.01 meters (52-06 1/4).  Her first two throws of the competition (14.67 meters and 14.86 meters) kept her on the bubble of making the top 12 cut.  On her last throw, Okwelogu launched her metal orb 15.13 meters (49-07 1/2) which jumped her into 9th overall.  Because she was one of the early throwers in the qualifying round, she had to wait to make sure her mark held up.  In the end, she finished with the 10th best qualifying throw and making the cut.  Okwelogu will compete in tonight’s shot put finals at 9:35pm EST.

Her Harvard teammate, Jade Miller, will also be competing tonight – Miller’s 400m hurdle semifinal will take place at 10:05pm EST.
