A new school year approaches – it’s time to get ready to race on the grass. The 2014 cross country season is starting up these next few weeks as students return to campus and begin their official cross country practices (or for the non-distance personnel, the fall training season).
The 2013 cross country season was one for the Ivy League record books, as we had a record number of NCAA qualifiers (4 men squads, 3 women squads, 2 alumni, and another 4 undergraduate individuals for a total of 47 athletes), a top-3 finish in the men’s national race (Harvard’s Maksim Korolev in 3rd), and our first ever Ivy League NCAA XC champion (Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino).
Even though we lost some talented runners to graduation or transferring, it does not mean the Ivy League has gotten weaker. In the USTFCCCA preseason national coaches’ polls released yesterday, the national coaches recognized the Dartmouth (#24), Cornell (#33), Princeton (#36), and Harvard (#40) women and the Princeton (#19), Columbia (#32), and Yale (#37) men among the best in the country. The Ivy League will also present at a number of national-caliber races throughout this fall, including the Iona Meet of Champions (September 20th), Coast to Coast Battle of Beantown (September 26th), Paul Short Invitational (October 4th), Wisconsin adidas Invitational (October 17th), and Pre-Nationals (October 18th).
We present a comprehensive 2014 cross country conference schedule below. This is based on the schedules presented on each of the schools’ athletic website. Cross country racing action does not begin for the League until September 12th with Cornell heading over to Army for their annual dual meet, Yale hosting the Harvard-Yale-Princeton tri-meet, and Penn hosting the local Big 5 Invitational. All of the teams will conclude their first round of racing by September 20th. We will do our best to share any information we find on how HepsNation can follow the races for any given weekend.
Princeton will host the Heps Cross Country Championships for the fourth straight year on Saturday, November 1st. There will be a sort of HepsXC preview before November – according to the team schedules, each school will be sending representatives to the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., on October 4th.
We know of at least six former Ivy League athletes who will be racing for another team this year: Maksim Korolev (Harvard-Stanford), Tyler Udland (Princeton-Florida State), Sammy Silva (Harvard-New Mexico), Waverly Neer (Columbia-Oregon), Margaret Connelly (Brown-Iowa State), and Morgan Kelly (Harvard-Virginia). If you know of any other alumni, please let us know.
