Even though this website was relatively quiet this past week, the Ivy League was not. The sole cross country competition we had this past weekend was the Iona Meet of Champions at the legendary Van Cortlandt Park (Bronx, N.Y.). Five Ivy squads competed, with the Ivies taking the top 3 team spots in the women’s 6km race (race featured 20 teams) and two top-10 team finishes in the 8km men’s race (23 teams).
Male Athlete of the Week:
Brown senior Jordan Mann was the top Ivy finisher in the men’s race, finishing fifth with 25:45.00. Mann finished over 40 seconds faster than he did in the 2013 edition of this race, where he had finished 26th overall in 26:20.23. The men’s race was won by UMass Lowell’s Robert Allen (25:32.72) with #13 Arkansas taking the men’s title by finishing 2-3-4 and with 46 points. Yale finished 7th in the team standings (208).
Male Rookie of the Week:
Brown frosh Matt Mahoney was the top Ivy freshman in the men’s race. Mahoney ran 26:22.32 for 20th place, holding off Yale’s #1 runner Hale Ross (who is also a freshman) by 7 seconds. Mahoney was the top Brown finisher at the Dartmouth Invitational two weeks ago.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Brown junior Lily Harrington led the Bears to the women’s team title in her season debut on Saturday. Brown won the title with 38 points, besting both Yale (86) and Princeton (141). Harrington was the #1 Brown runner for the day, finishing 5th overall with 22:34.85 and leading a Brown 5-6-7-8-12 finish that only spanned 13 seconds.
Female Rookie of the Week:
Princeton frosh Gabrielle Forrest was the top female Ivy runner at the Meet of Champions, as she finished 3rd overall in 22:31.21. Princeton sent an all-freshman squad to the Bronx in order to allow more chances for the newbies to compete in college races. Last weekend, Forrest had finished 10th at the HYP tri-meet in New Haven, helping Princeton to claim the team title.
