The Battle in Beantown brought out some great performances from our Ivy athletes, including three of our four Athletes of the Week. Cornell’s Ben Rainero and Harvard’s Courtney Smith were the top Ivies in their respective races. They accomplished this by either taking charge of their respective race (Rainero) or maintaining contact with the speedy leaders (Smith). Both athletes finished 5th in their respective races – Rainero finished his 8km race in 24:04.0 while Smith ran 16:58.1 for the 5km. Rainero helped the Big Red men to a 4th place team finish, while Smith led the Crimson women to a 7th place team finish. This is Rainero’s second straight honor for male athlete of the week.
Harvard will be taking home a second award this week. Austin Gilbert was the top Ivy freshman in the men’s 8km race. He finished as Harvard’s #3 man this week, finishing 39th overall with a time of 24:47.0. The Crimson men finished 6th overall in the team standings. He improved his team finish from the HYP tri-meet a few weekends ago where he finished as the 5th runner for the Crimson.
Meanwhile, Princeton gets their first accolade of the season with female rookie Brighie Leach. At the Iona Meet of Champions two weekends ago, she finished 5th overall with a time of 22:29.4 for the 6km race. She was the second Lady Tiger finisher as she was only one step behind Emily de La Bruyere in crossing that finish line. Leach helped the Princeton team to a third place team finish, which helped the team maintain a national ranking going into this week.
