The Brown Bears are only looking in one direction on Friday – up. Last year, they finished eighth in the team standings at HepsXC. Throughout the 2015 season, they have been the lowest ranked Ivy squad in the Northeast region. But things can change in the Bronx on HepsXC race day, and that is what Coach Tim Springfield is hoping for. The team lost three scoring seniors to the 2015 graduation but the undergraduates have stepped it up this fall.
Will Sheeran is the top returner from the 2014 HepsXC squad for the season. Last year at HepsXC, he finished 32nd overall as the team’s #2 finisher. While he had a good debut at the Nassaney Invitational in early September as the team’s #1 runner, he sat out for a few weeks due to a minor injury before returning to the team competition at PreNationals. At that meet, he finished as the #2 team runner as rookie Eli Moskowitz led the team in the race. Moskowitz has improved over the course of the season as he’s adapted to the 8km cross country distance. He was the #3 team runner in his debut at the Battle in Beantown and then rose to being the #1 runner at PreNationals. It’s a similar situation with rookie Franco Martins. He too has adapted to the 8km rather well, rising from the team’s fifth runner at the Battle in Beantown to the team’s fourth runner at PreNationals. Matt Mahoney has also shared the #1 runner role for the team as he led the Bears at the Battle in Beantown. The main consistent scorers for the team this year have been Ryan Anderson and Stephen Bourguet. Both men have scored in the three meets that they have participated in this season. Tucker Hamilton – another returning scorer from the HepsXC 2014 team – is back this season and is aiming to score for the team again on Friday.
