Columbia Men, Awad Claim 2015 HepsXC Titles

The 2015 HepsXC Championship made its exciting return to the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt Park today and the races were definitely championship worthy.  It seemed to be near ideal racing conditions – mid-50s, partly sunny, and breezy in the open grass areas. We’ll break up the races – first up, the men’s 5 mile championship race.

Penn’s Thomas Awad became the first men’s repeat champion since Dartmouth’s Ben True did so in 2005 and 2006 (True later won a third HepsXC title in 2008 after taking 2007 off), becoming the fourth man to do it overall within a career.  Cornell’s Ben Rainero initially started the race at a quick pace, controlling the race through the 5km checkpoint (15:13.9), while Columbia’s Tait Rutherford and Jack Boyle, Dartmouth’s Brian Masterson, and Yale’s Kevin Dooney all were near the front of the pack.  Awad worked his way near the front by the 4.1km split.  Awad took the lead just before the 7.1km split (22:02.5) and Rainero did his best to stay on Awad’s shoulder.  Within sight of the finish line, Awad let off his mighty kick – a kick that Rainero could not respond to.  Awad powered away to defend his title in 24:26.4.  Dooney and Myjer also released their kicks down the final gravel stretch, running past Rainero just before the line to finish in second, third, and fourth respectively.  Yale’s James Randon was the first non-senior to cross the line, crossing in 5th place.  Masterson and Boyle finished 6th and 7th, respectively, rounding out the First Team All-Ivy selections.

It was a tight team battle between Columbia and Penn throughout the race though, but due to Columbia getting three men in the top 10, they were able to secure the team title over Penn by 4 points.  This was Columbia’s first team title since 2013 and a first title for Coach Dan Ireland.  Meanwhile, the runner up team finish is Penn’s best finish at a HepsXC Championship since 1974 when they also finished in 2nd place.
