Princeton Women Sweep 2015 HepsXC Titles

The 2015 HepsXC Championship made its exciting return to the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt Park today and the races were definitely championship worthy.  It seemed to be near ideal racing conditions – mid-50s, partly sunny, and breezy in the open grass areas. We’ll break up the races -and now, the women’s 6km championship race.

Princeton decided to end their women’s championship drought today as they claimed both the individual and team titles by significant margins.  After completing the grass loops and entering into the woods, it appeared to be anyone’s race as all of the pre-race favorites – Brown’s Natalie Schrudowitz, Dartmouth’s Dana Giordano, Harvard’s Courtney Smith, Princeton’s Elizabeth Bird, Penn’s Ashley Montgomery, and Columbia’s Olivia Sadler -were all in the front, jockeying for position.  Giordano and Bird were co-leading at the 3.1km split (10:27.7/10:27.8), but not long after, Bird made her move to go solo.  By the 5.1km split, Bird had almost 6 seconds up on the field (17:59.2) while Smith was sitting in second place and Giordano in third.  Bird kept on extending her lead as she left the woods and ran on the gravel road for the last time, crossing the finish line in 20:47.4.  The battle for second place was indeed exciting as Giordano – who was beaten two other times this season by Smith – passed Smith with 10 feet to go and secured her runner-up position – 20:55.4 to 20:55.9.  Princeton got two more runners in the top 7 – Emily de La Bruyere in 4th and Kathryn Fluehr in 6th.  The two Princeton runners were split up by Montgomery.  Yale’s Frances Schmiede edged out her teammate Dana Klein for the final spot in the First-Team All-Ivy selection.ivyleague-bird
