Several Ivy League athletes participated in this weekend’s Olympic Marathon Trials, held in Los Angeles. Competitors had to run a qualifying marathon or half marathon time to be eligible for the race, and the top three men and women finishers earned a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team for the upcoming games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Conditions were far from ideal, with temperatures in the 70s toward the end of both the men’s and women’s races, and many athletes were forced to drop out.
So how did the former Ivy athletes fare? None qualified for the Olympics, but there were several impressive performances —and the top Ivy finishers were both Cornellians. Running her debut marathon, Katie Kellner (Cornell ’13) was the top finisher for the women in 28th (2:43: 41). Kellner’s Hansons Running teammate, Desi Linden, finished second overall to earn a trip to Rio. On the men’s side, Max King (Cornell ’02) finished 12th in a time of 2:17:14. It should be noted that King finished fifth last weekend at the USATF Cross Country National Championships in Bend, Ore.
Four other Ivy alumni placed in the top 30: Hilary Dionne (Dartmouth ’07), 37th, 2:44:44; Brendan Martin, (Columbia ’11), 20th, 2:20:41; Ethan Shaw (Dartmouth ’12), 21st, 2:20:56; and Chris Zablocki (Dartmouth ’10), 30th, 2:22:59.
