The women’s competition got started with the pentathlon hurdles. Cornell’s Jasmine Robinson opened up the competition with the fastest time in the field – 8.79. Harvard’s Madison Hansen was the second fastest in the field with 8.81, followed by defending Indoor Heps champ Taylor Morgan in 8.83. The women are off to the high jump next.
Princeton’s Jake Scinto is having a great start in the men’s heptathlon. Scinto had the fastest 60m time by being the only athlete going sub-7.00 in the first event of the multi-eventer. Dartmouth’s Nico Robinson – the defending Indoor Heps champ – had the second fastest time in 7.11, followed by Cornell’s Austin Jamerson in 7.14. Scinto followed that up with the best long jump performance of 7.22m (23-08 1/4) that he set on his final attempt. He leads after 2 events with 1752 points, followed by Jamerson in 1623 points and Harvard’s Mark Hill in 1604 points.
Cornell’s Tobenna Attah set a new Barton Hall record in the 400m preliminaries. He won his heat in 48.13, besting Princeton’s Josh Freeman by over 1.5 seconds (49.82). Brown went 1-2 in the second heat with Ryan Kelly (49.02) and Nik Zemis (49.89), followed by Dartmouth’s Zach Plante (50.15) and Columbia’s Calvin Yelnats (50.24). Princeton and Cornell got the final qualifiers out of the third heat as Ray Mennin won in 48.39 and Michael Smith (pictured above) was the runner up in 48.77.
The first points of the meet came from the men’s weight throw. Cornell’s Rudy Winkler defended his title with 21.76m (71-04 3/4) – the #2 performance in Indoor Heps meet history. Princeton rookie Adam Kelly did his best to keep up with Winkler by also breaking 21 meters, but he had to settle for second place with 21.05m (69-00 3/4) – the #4 performance in Indoor Heps meet history and improves his #8 position in Ivy League history.
