Cornell needed to do well in the men’s 200m final in order to eat into some of Princeton’s lead in the team standings.  Rookie Alex Beck set the track on fire in heat 1, powering to a 21.66 heat win while teammate Larry Gibson was second in 21.88.  It looked good for the Big Red… but then the defending champion Carrington Akosa of Princeton ran.  He ate up the turn and held off Penn’s Calvary Rogers to win the heat and set a new meet record – 21.56 for Akosa.  Rogers also finished ahead of Beck with 21.58.  Beck finished third and Cornell also got points for 5th and 6th.  Brown’s Ryan Kelly finished fourth overall in 21.80.

There were two questions for the women’s 200m final. One – could Harvard rookie Gabrielle Thomas get her third win of the weekend? And two – could she run fast enough to make the NCAA cut? Coaches believe she would need to run faster than 23.5 for the conversion to make the cut.  But with Jennifer Meech of Dartmouth, Imani Sloan of Penn, and Cornell’s Udeme Akpaete in the final with her, it would be a tough challenge.  Meech won the first heat in 24.23 over Cornell’s Adrian Jones and Akpaete.  In the second heat, Sloan challenged Thomas in the final stretch but Thomas had the better finishing strength to claim her third title of the weekend.  Thomas reset the Barton Hall 200m record in 23.80.  Thomas is on track to becoming the second woman to ever win four individual titles at an Indoor Heps – the first being Cornell’s Jeomi Maduka.
