Honoring Cantello

While we may focus a lot on the current configuration of the Ivy League, we need to recognize one of the former members of the Heptagonal Conference today.

Yesterday, long time Navy head men’s cross country coach and assistant coach of the men’s track & field program Al Cantello was honored with a proclamation by Speaker of the House Michael E. Bush of the Maryland House of Delegates. The proclamation recognizes Cantello for an extraordinary coaching career, one that includes his Navy teams beating Army 48 times in their annual cross country dual meet as a head coach.

“The longer you live, the more honors you accumulate,” Cantello said to Navy Athletics yesterday. “I have known the speaker [Michael Bush] since he was in high school. He is a credit to the community and accepting this proclamation from him makes it doubly significant.”

The Navy Midshipmen were members of the Heptagonal Conference from 1941 to 2003, where the team won a total of 13 Heptagonal Games titles (8 in cross country, 2 indoor track & field, 3 outdoor track & field).  The Midshipmen are currently members of the Patriot League conference where they have won 10 track conference titles since the 2003-04 season.  Most recently, Navy has won their outdoor dual meet against long-time rival Army for the 10th consecutive track & field match up.

Congratulations, coach.
