Yesterday, Adam Nelson wrote the following tweet: “The most difficult thing about qualifying rounds at the Olympic trials is qualifying. #strongat40”
Well, the hard part is over.
Nelson made the top 12 cut in the shot put qualification round earlier this afternoon, throwing the ninth best distance of the field 20.22m (66-04 1/4). Perhaps it was that shirt he was wearing that helped him advance to the finals? Nelson is wearing it in honor of his two young daughters, Caroline and Lolo.
Now, time for a top 3 finish to make his fourth Olympic Team. He’d need to throw better than 20.59m (67-06 3/4) to get into the top three. Ryan Crouser currently leads the field with a 20.97m (68-09 3/4) distance.
Hopefully, that shirt will continue to give Nelson some magic tonight starting at 8:40pm ET.
UPDATE: before the evening session began at Hayward Field, Nelson was honored with the gold medal ceremony he never really had for his 2004 Olympic Games performance. He was originally awarded a silver medal back at the 2004 Athens Games, but it was upgraded to gold as the original winner was found to have used performance enhancing drugs. Nelson finally received his gold medal back in 2013.
