HepsXC ’17 Athletes of the Week #1

Female Athlete of the Week – With the graduation of Henna Rustami and Natalie Tanner, Columbia was in search of a new leader for its distance corp.  Nell Crosby appears to be the top contender for this position this season.  At last Saturday’s Columbia XC Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park, she won the women’s 6km race in 21:45.9, a 9 second cushion over Cornell’s Jackie Katzman.  The win helped the Lady Lions win the meet with 19 points – which included in-conference competition from Cornell (40) and Brown (78) – as Columbia claimed six of the top 10 positions.  Crosby previously earned Second-Team All-American honors in the steeplechase last June.

Male Athlete of the Week – Brown senior Martin Martinez has had a sparse collegiate cross country career going into the Columbia XC Invitational.  He’s only had one complete grass season so far – back in 2014 when he was a freshman – and he only raced once in 2016.  Martinez started his 2017 season on a good note, however, as he won the men’s 5 mile race in 26:45.8 to win by almost 3 seconds.  Martinez’ win helped the Bears finish second overall, as Cornell won with 30 points, Brown 36, Columbia 61, and NYU 118.

Rookies of the Week – This edition honors a pair of Big Green athletes – Patrick O’Brien and Ella Ketchum – as both freshmen finished as the runner-up in their collegiate debuts at the Maribel Sanchez Souther XC Invitational (formerly the Dartmouth XC Invitational).  O’Brien finished the 8km course in 25:10.89 and was a part of a Dartmouth 1-2-3-4-5 finish.  Ketchum completed the 6km course in 21:38.56 and helped Dartmouth complete a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 sweep.
