HepsXC ’17: Athletes of the Week #4 and #5

I know we’ve been quiet for awhile, but we’re back.  And now, time for a double-stuffed edition of our Athlete of the Week honors, as we will present our awards for all of the performances since September 29.

Female Athletes of the Week:

  • #4 – Penn senior Abby Hong was the top Ivy finisher in the Paul Short Gold 6km race, as she was 12th overall with a time of 20:15.8.  This was Hong’s best ever performance at Paul Short as last year, she was 49th overall with a time of 20:52.0.  The Lady Quakers finished 9th in the team standings with 320 points.
  • #4 and #5 – Columbia senior Nell Crosby is showing herself to be a contender for the HepsXC individual title with her continual strong showings at national level.  Two weeks ago, she was fourth at the Sam Bell Invitational in 20:52.03, which helped Columbia finish just five points behind then-#14 Indiana.  This past weekend, Crosby was the top Ivy finisher at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational last Friday as she finished 35th overall in 20:28.9.  This resulted in the Lady Lions to finish 12th overall, besting five nationally ranked teams in the process (including then-#28 Yale).  Now, Columbia is ranked #24 in the latest USTFCCCA national poll.

Male Athletes of the Week:

  • #4 – Cornell senior Dominic Deluca got a top 10 finish in the Paul Short Gold 8km race, as he finished 9th overall with a time of 23:48.  The performance is a best for him on this course as he was 21 seconds faster and finished 14 places better than he did in 2016.  The Big Red men finished 12th in the team scoring for the Gold Race.
  • #5 – Penn senior Kevin Monogue had a strong final 2km at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational as he moved up almost 20 positions to finish 68th overall in 24:29.2.  He was the first Ivy finisher.  The Quakers finished 24th in the field, beating then-#30 Columbia and four other nationally ranked teams.  The Quakers are now receiving votes in the most recent USTFCCCA national poll.

Female Rookies of the Week:

  • #4 – Princeton was the top Ivy in the Paul Short Gold Race on 9/30 with a 5th place team finish as they had a 17.1 second scoring spread.  The Lady Tigers were led by rookie Sophie Cantine, who finished 32nd overall with a time of 20:37.5.
  • #5 – The award for this week will be shared between two sisters: Danielle and Gabrielle Orie.  Last Friday, Danielle crossed the finish line as the first Quaker at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitation in 65th place in 20:55.7, helping the team to finish 31st in the team standings.  The next day at the Penn State National Open, Gabrielle was Cornell’s first finisher as she crossed the finish line in 18th place in 20:52.7.  She helped Cornell to a fifth place team finish.

Male Rookies of the Week:

  • #4 – Penn rookie Ryan Renken was the top Ivy finisher in the Paul Short Gold Race.  He finished 75th overall in 24:40.1 and was the 7th finisher for Penn.  The Quakers finished 4th overall in the team standings with 187 points.
  • #5 – Harvard rookie Hugo Milner has become a reliable #1 runner for the Crimson.  At the Princeton XC Invitational, he finished 9th overall in the 8km race with a time of 24:20.9.  He was first freshman finisher in the race.  Harvard finished 13th out of 21 teams at the meet.
