The NCAA Division 1 Track and Field Championship committee have announced the following athletes who will participate in the Championship Season.

In the East Region, 145 Ivy League performances across 37 events have qualified athletes for the next round being held North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.. This includes three relay squads: Cornell men 4×100; Princeton men 4×400, and Harvard women 4×400. Not including any relays, Cornell leads the number of qualifying performances with 33, with Princeton (24) and Columbia (23) having the next highest number of qualifiers. The Ivies currently have 4 regional leaders: Abbey D’Agostino in the 5,000m, Rachel Sorna in the steeplechase, Stephen Mozia in the shot put, and Julia Ratcliffe in the hammer throw. For the men’s competition, the 5,000m has the most number of Ivy qualifiers, with 11 men earning a bid. For the women, that honor goes for the steeplechase with 10 qualifiers.

In the West Regional, two new teammates have qualified as Longhorns: former Lion Kyle Merber in the 1,500m as the 10th seed and former Tiger Trevor Van Ackeren in the steeplechase as the 12th seed. Merber will be up again former Big Green-current Duck Matt Miner in the 1500m (14th seed).

Ivy alum Tyler King has qualified in the steeplechase in the East Region. The former Tiger now competes for Boston College as a graduate student.

Some athletes were really close to the top-24 cutoff for the automatic bid to Nationals in the multi-events, but they were not selected this year.

See after the break for the full East Regional Ivy qualifying list.

We’ve previously shared with you the logistics for the East Regional Preliminary Round. Now we will share who is likely to go…

We’ve updated our East Regional ranking lists, showing all Ivy Leaguers within the top 48. We have also included the top event performances (regardless of their school affiliation) and some performances that could make the cut if someone decides to “not-declare” in a given event. Sorry, Mary is too insecure in her psychic abilities to try and guess who will make the cut.

We will report all qualifiers once they are announced later this week. Good luck to all athletes.

Nathan Crumpton image (more to come!)

Early afternoon on Thursday, we expect to learn more than 100 Heps athletes will be heading to Greensboro, N.C., for the Eastern Preliminary Rounds of the NCAA Championships. That will be May 23-25. The West Coasters will participate that same weekend in Austin, Texas.

Here’s a little low down:

• The top 48 declared athletes in the East will be accepted for competition in the 40 individual events (20 each gender). For relays it is just the top 24. And the NCAA wants you to know that the “stated maximums are absolute and will not be extended as a result of ties.” So don’t call them, they don’t like questions. Here are the descending order lists: MEN | WOMEN.

• The announcement of those accepted — including those combined event competitors who will be heading straight to nationals (no hep or dec at regionals) — will come by 1 pm on Thursday. That’s Eastern time.

• Getting to Eugene, Ore., requires a top 12 finish, for both individuals and relays, at the regional. The NCAA says “qualification, through competition in an event at a preliminary championships competition, is required to participate in that event at the final championships competition.” In other words, don’t call them.

• Those who have qualified from the preliminary championships competition will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday, May 26, by 5 pm.

• All seats at Aggie Stadium are general admission and there will be no online purchasing. So be ready to duke it out along the finish line. Will call orders may be picked up at the Sullivan Street ticket booths beginning on May 23. Tickets can be purchased by calling the A&T ticket office at (336) 334-7749. Weekend tickets are $25 for people between the ages of 17 and 65. Young and old get in for $15. Single day it is $10 for an adult, $7 for a youth, free if you are two-and-under (congrats on being able to read this at two). And it appears that the senior set has to pay full fare for a single day. Where’s AARP?

• More parking information than you will ever need: “Teams with vans may park in Lot A4 and enter the main gate which is located on the west side (press box) of Aggie Stadium. Buses will unload on Sullivan Street and continue to War Memorial which is two blocks from Aggie Stadium on Lindsay Street where they can park. Spectator parking will be located at Lots A3, A4, M4, General Classrooms and Laurel Street. Parking at the stadium for spectators will be $10 per day.

• The Eastern Preliminary schedule is posted here in a rather ugly form. We intend to pretty it up in HTML format soon, but right now a little dog needs a morning walk.

The University of New Mexico is getting one of the nation's top runners next season as Princeton's Peter Callahan will join the Lobos as a graduate student.

Mary caught up with Peter Callahan after LetsRun.com reported that he’d finish his collegiate eligibility at the University of New Mexico. A history major and sub-four miler at Princeton, Callahan’s senior thesis delved into British naval innovations during World War I, including study on the environmental impact of combat. Here’s what he had to say about his next step:

Before I talk about my grad school decision, I want to first emphasize how lucky I have felt to be a part of Ivy League track & field for these past several years. Racing for Princeton has been an honor and a privilege that I will not soon forget, and the mutual respect and camaraderie that is apparent between all teams at the Heps is truly something special. I will always be a Tiger, and I absolutely look forward to being a part of this unique community for the rest of my life.

In regards to my decision to attend New Mexico this coming fall, I wanted to be at a place where I could continue with Environmental Studies, which is my minor as an undergraduate, while at the same time carry on with running in the NCAA. Without Princeton (and the rest of the league) as an option, I visited several schools this winter and found that UNM was the best fit. Coach (Joe) Franklin and his team have a great culture and successful tradition, and the weather/altitude of Albuquerque is quite appealing after years of Midwest and East Coast winters. Whatever happens in the years to come, however, I’ll certainly be keeping close tabs on my team in New Jersey.

And, of course, we will be keeping tabs on Peter as well. Any other senior planning to pursue grad school and intercollegiate running should send us a note about it!

BYU opted to bring an East Coast-West Coast rivalry to the IC4A Championships this year and the Cornell Big Red — particularly its field event stars — held up the honor.

The world of East Coast track & field would have been in a world of hurt if not for the Cornell men. For it was the Big Red which scored 68 points at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., to hold off the team from Brigham Young in its first venture to the Championships.

Cornell ended up 12 points ahead of second-place BYU and third-place George Mason. Columbia was eighth overall and Harvard 16th.

The bulk of the points came from the field events, where the Red racked up more than 50 points en route to the Ivy League’s first IC4A win since 1982 and Cornell’s first since 1951. Three individuals were Eastern champions — junior Steven Bell in the long jump (7.49m / 24-7), sophomore Stephen Mozia in the shot put (17.98m / 59-0) and sophomore Rob Robbins in the javelin (71.11m / 233-4). Mozia also took second in the discus with a best of 57.63 meters (189-1).

High jumping juniors Montez Blair and Tommy Butler added another 11 points as Blair was third (2.17m / 7-1 1/2) and Butler fourth (2.09 / 6-10 1/4). Nice to see Penn junior Maalik Reynolds post his best leap of the season, clearing 2.20 meters (7-2 1/2) for second.

Columbia sophomore Brendon Fish joined the three Cornell champions with a victory in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:51.14. Teammates Connor Claflin (1:51.37) and Harry McFann (1:51.66) were third and fourth.

The Heps’ story on the women’s side was the third-place Princeton Tigers, which like the Cornell men, had three individual winners. Senior Greta Feldman took the 800-meter run in 2:05.56 (she actually ran 2:05.03 in qualifying), senior Alexis Mikaelian won the 1,500-meter run in 4:24.69 (just ahead of Harvard’s Sammy Silva) and eight-time Heps’ pole vault champion Tory Worthen took her specialty with a clearance of 3.91 (12-10).

UConn was a decisive team champ with 73 points, well ahead of UMES (53) and Princeton (51 1/2). Two other Ivies were in the top 10 — Harvard sixth with 36 and Heps’ champion Cornell in eighth with 31.

Cornell senior Victoria Imbesi was the fourth individual titlist for the League with her javelin throw of 48.41 meters (158-10). Harvard’s standout performance came in the 4×400-meter relay. The Crimson was fourth in the final (3:38.98) after running a school-record 3:37.90 in the heats.

Brown senior Lacey Craker claimed 12 points with two third-place finishes — in the discus (47.74m / 156-7) and in the hammer (58.82m / 193-0).

This past weekend’s Outdoor Heps marked the beginning of the championship season for the Ivy League athletes. A number of these performances have positioned the athletes in good regional standing.

As you may know, there are no regional standards – the top 48 individuals and top 24 relay squads qualify for the “regional rounds” of the NCAA National Championship format. The East Regional Championships will be hosted by the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C., on May 23rd to 25th. Out of that championships, the top 12 finishers and relays qualify for the NCAA National Championships on June 5th to 8th at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. The multi-eventers’ path is different, in that the top 24 NATIONAL performances bypass North Carolina and go straight to Oregon.

Presented below the cut are the Ivy League performances that fall within the top 50 of the region. We have included the top regional performance to show a comparison. For the multi-events, we have added in their national ranking to share who is close to the Go-Straight-To-Oregon cut. With ECACs, IC4As, and some other last chance meets taking place this weekend, we do expect the rankings to change, but we wish/dream/pray that all Ivy Leaguers to rise UP in the rankings to assure that they get a chance to compete at regionals. After all, we know which conference produces the best athletes, right?

Heps Track is looking for some good talent to further the cause.

I gotten complaints from a number of folks — including some particularly nasty ones — about a decision we made at HepsTrack.com regarding meet coverage.

My position is that the presentation of the meet at the venue is more important than anything that is done online. That’s why, when I was contacted the week before the championship and asked to help by the host institution, I did.

Mary and I discussed the implications and she provided superb coverage on Twitter over the weekend. Every heat, updates all day long. If you couldn’t make it to Heps, we certainly create an opportunity for you to follow the action as it happened.

And still — despite the fact that we both volunteer to do this — people were name calling via anonymous email.

That leads me to this — if you want something, support it. One way is to volunteer to help. Doing coverage of an track & field event is no easy task. At the Penn Relays we now have a team of about 40 volunteers who help with the website. And, not surprisingly, it is viewed as the best results site on the planet.

We have gotten tremendous help from photographers. In fact, here are galleries with a collection of more than 10,000 images from Heps.

Nathan Crumpton — Saturday | Sunday

Doug Austin — Saturday | Sunday

But we certainly could use additional help at Heps Cross Country, Indoor Heps and Outdoor Heps to provide fuller coverage. If you are willing to help provide for the larger Heps community, particularly in the area of writing and interviewing, please let me know by giving feedback here.

Both chases for the 2013 Outdoor Heps titles were shaken up by team dominance in Saturday evening’s 10,000-meter runs.

For the women, it was the Cornell Big Red winning big, scoring 21 of the event’s 31 points as senior Katie Kellner won in 33:29.64, just two-tenths ahead of Brown senior Olivia Mickle. Juniors Rachel Sorna (33:34.59) and Devin McMahon (34:27.26) were third and fourth as Cornell jumped into the Day 1 lead with 44 points, 12 ahead of the Brown Bears.

Host Princeton was third with two notable victories. Senior Tory Worthen made it eight-for-eight in the pole vault, clearing 3.82 (12-6 1/4) to claim her fourth Outdoor Heps title. She’d won her fourth Indoor title at Harvard in February.

The other impressive Tiger win came from freshman Julia Ratcliffe, who bettered the previous meet hammer throw standard five times en route to victory. Her best throw of the day was 66.51 meters (218-2), 18 feet ahead of Brown senior Lacey Craker.

Other women’s winners on the day were Columbia senior Uju Ofoche, who soared 6.03 meters (19-9 1/2) for her fifth straight title, and Cornell senior Victoria Imbesi, who took the javelin with a best of 48.29 meters (158-5).

On the men’s side, the day-ending 10k was owned by the host school as the Tigers claimed 24 points to overtake Cornell, 44-41, in the first day standings. Senior Michael Franklin won in 29:46.77 while junior Chris Bendtsen stormed past Columbia senior Mike Murphy for second place. Tiger junior teammates Alejandro Arroyo Yamin and Tyler Udland finished in a virtual dead heat for fourth. Arroyo took that place by .003.

Harvard senior Nico Weiler flirted with a no height before taking the pole vault with a clearance of 17-00 3/4. The long jump went to Princeton junior Tom Hopkins by just a 1/4 inch over Cornell junior Steven Bell, 24-9 1/4 to 24-9. If Princeton were to win the meet by two points, everyone should remember this finish.

Cornell sophomore Rob Robbins won the javelin with a big throw of 69.39 meters (227-8), but Dartmouth senior Brett Gilson gave him a run for the money with a throw of 67.65 meters (221-11). The other winner on the day was Columbia senior Duncan Dickerson, who claimed the hammer in 58.94 meters (193-4). He was the first Lion to ever win the hammer.

This weekend will be a little different here at HepsTrack.

I was asked to help serve as a public address announcer and I am happy to serve that role. That also means I can’t post on here as I normally would, though I will be posting on the normal result boards.

BUT… You can still follow along heat-by-heat as our Twitter guru Mary Boggs will post more frequently than you thought anyone could. Just follow us at @HepsTrack. We will also be using the hashtag #oHeps. Join in the commentary!

Start Lists: Women | Men

Here’s the scoop on some of the performers and events.

On the women’s side:

Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino is going to defend titles in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs (as expected) … Cornell’s Rachel Sorna is entered in the 3k, 10k and the steeplechase. Wow! … Columbia’s Waverly Neer is entered both the 3k and the 5k … Harvard rookie Autumne Franklin, as one would guess, is running both hurdles … Greta Feldman of Princeton is entered in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. Both of those events are stacked … Columbia’s Marvellous Iheukumere is entered in the 100 and 200 while Sharay Hale is back at Heps! She will compete in the 200 and 400.

For the men:

Cornell’s Bruno Hortelano-Roig is running the 200 and 400 … Tom Hopkins of Princeton is doing both of those as well as the long jump … Brown junior John Spooney will try to defend his titles in both the 100 and 200 … Princeton’s Austin Hollimon will run both the 400 flat and hurdles! … Look for two runners without times in the 1,500 this weekend — Princeton’s Peter Callahan and Harvard’s Adam Cotton. … The 800 is stacked — six under 1:50 this year plus Princeton’s Russell Dinkins. … Cornell’s Stephen Mozia is throwing the shot, discus and hammer … In the jumps, Montez Blair of Cornell is in the high and long while Princeton’s Damon McLean will compete in both the long and triple.

Get ready!
