Olympians — Dartmouth

heps-logo-dartmouth
The Big Green have been hitting the Olympic slopes since John Carleton ’22 was on the U.S. team for the first Winter Games, 1924 in Chamonix, France. Carleton’s skis paved a path that 44 Dartmouth skiers have followed.

Chick Igaya ’57, a native of Japan, was one of those forty-four. Igaya, a six-time NCAA champion, was on the Japanese team for the 1952 (Oslo), 1956 (Cortina d’Ampezzo), and 1960 (Squaw Valley) Games. He was awarded the silver medal in the slalom at the 1956 Games. Igaya has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1982.

Female Dartmouth skiers have also been in recent games. Liz McIntyre ’87, a freestyle skier, was on the US team for the 1992 (Albertville), 1994 (Lillehammer), and 1998 (Nagano) games. She won the silver medal in the 1994 games.

Dartmouth Olympians are also versatile. Edward Williams ’64 and Donald Nielson, Jr. ’74 participated in the winter biathlon and skiing events. The winter biathlon involves skiing and shooting. Williams was in the 1968 Grenoble games, while Nielson participated in the 1980 Lake Placid and 1984 Sarajevo games.

Though the majority of Dartmouth Olympians are clearly winter athletes, the Big Green are successful in the summer as well. Dana Chladek ’85 won the bronze medal in the kayak slalom singles in the 1992 Barcelona Games. She followed up her performance in the 1996 Atlanta Games by tying the first-place finisher with a time of 2:44.49. However, placing last in the non-counting second run left her with a silver medal.

Crawford Palmer ’93, has the distinction of being one of two Ivy League basketball players to win a medal in Olympic basketball competition. The other is Bill Bradley (Princeton ’65) who helped the U.S. team to the gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Games. Palmer, a McDonald’s All-American in 1988, attended Duke University until his junior year, upon which he transferred to Dartmouth.

He won a silver medal at the 2002 Sydney Games, as a member of the French team. Palmer married into French citizenship and plays pro ball in France.
