Rowing — Women

The Ivy League had a breakthrough in women’s rowing at the 2008 Beijing Games as three of the rowers on the gold-medal-winning eight were products of the League. All three — Caryn Davies (Harvard ’05), Susan Francia (Penn ’04) and Caroline Lind (Princeton ’06) — are back in 2012.

Even before that success, women’s rowing had proven to be a lucrative sport for Ivy athletes seeking Olympic medals. In all, the League has produced 16 medalists, beginning in 1976. Three medalists came out of those 1976 Games in Montreal. In the women’s eight, Yale’s Anne Warner, Princeton’s Carol Brown and Cornell’s Marion Greig teamed up to earn a bronze medal. Each of the women was in a completely different situation at the time. Brown was already a year out of school, while Greig had just graduated from Cornell. Warner still had a year left at Yale. Brown returned to the Olympics again in 1984 despite an eight-year layoff due to the boycott in 1980.

The only Ivy League woman to win more than one medal in rowing is Anne Marden of Princeton. Marden won a silver in two Summer Games, 1984 and 1988. In Los Angeles in 1984, she had help from fellow Ivy Leaguer Virginia Gilder in the quadruple sculls. That year, Dartmouth graduate Carlie Geer won a silver in the single sculls. Marden matched that feat in 1988 when she switched events.
