Sean Furey — a two-sport athlete (football, outdoor track & field) when he studied at Dartmouth — really shined when he was handed a javelin. Growing up in northeastern Massachusetts, he won multiple state titles in the javelin before claiming the National Scholastic title in 2000. Furey earned All-Ivy status in 2003 and 2004, before winning the Heps jav title his senior year (2005).

That same year, Furey set a Dartmouth school record (242-3), earned All-American status with a third-place finish at NCAAs and took home the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year by the U.S. track coaches. After graduating, he has balanced his professional training while working part-time as a mechanical engineer.

He qualified for his first World Championship by placing third at the USATF National Championship in 2009 before finishing 12th at the IAAF World Championships that summer in Berlin. Furey won his first national title in 2010 by setting a personal best of 262-0. He finished second at the 2011 Nationals, but his mark (255-10 3/4) did not qualify him for the USA roster for the IAAF World Championships.

In 2012, Furey set a personal best of 271-5, which surpassed the Olympic A standard and was the top American throw of the season. His fourth-place finish at the 2012 Olympic Trials was enough for inclusion to the Team USA Olympic roster as neither of the top two finishers had met the qualifying standard.
